India — Sacred Cow
The cow (go) is sacred in Hinduism — protected by law in most Indian states and revered as a symbol of the divine mother. The cow gives five gifts (panchagavya): milk, curd, butter, urine, and dung — all considered sacred and purifying. The cow is identified with Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling divine cow who can produce anything desired.
Ancient Egypt — Hathor
Hathor — the Egyptian goddess of love, beauty, music, and maternal care — was depicted as a cow or as a woman with cow's horns holding the solar disk. Hathor was the divine mother par excellence: she nursed the pharaoh, welcomed the dead into the afterlife, and embodied the joy and abundance of life. The cow's milk was literally the divine mother's gift.
Celtic Tradition
